Akira Kurosawa almost comitted suicide circa 1971. This almost coincides with the release of Dodesukaden (1970) which was his first colour movie but also his first major failure. Knowing this intringuing details, I sumerged myself into this movie and the experience couldn’t be better.
Dodesukaden is a story of people and their emotions, reactions, stories… in short, about behaviours and their reason. Because every strange behaviour has a reason behind it. That always bitter man used to be happy one day, that harsh woman is harsh because men were harsh to her, that rich family used to be poor, and that poor family next to them used to be rich. That’s life and that’s Dodesukaden.
