Last year in Marienbad / 去年マリエンバートで (1960)

Art. That’s the word to define the exercise about time Resnais ended calling “Last Year in Marienbaad” (L’Année dernière à Marienbad). Most films revolve around central characters, others put more emphasis on the places but I can’t recall a single film that focuses so much on time like LYIM does. Using an awesome photography and a tedious narrator voice, the film guides us around a weird hotel with grotesque characters that the viewer will undoubtedly relate to puppets. Indeed, they are puppets… puppets of time.
